Luigi Mangione is charged with murder in the deadly shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The 26-year-old was allegedly detained with a gun, bullets, fake IDs, cash, and a handwritten “manifesto.”
The shooting of the CEO was already shocking, and maybe even more when friends and family found out it was allegedly Mangione who carried out the plot.
When it comes to his own mother, she wasn’t quite shocked it was him.
When detectives reached out to Luigi Mangione’s mother after the first photos of the suspect emerged, she was quite certain it was him.
She told investigators the shooting “might be something that she could see him doing.”
This news came as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced an indictment against Mangione on first-degree murder charges, per PEOPLE.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny addressed a missing person report filed by Mangione’s mother, Kathleen, during a press conference, where he announced the indictment.
The grinning picture of him resembled the missing Mangione, who was reported missing by his mother in November.
A tip led to a task force of FBI and NYPD personnel reaching out to Luigi Mangione’s mom on Dec. 7.
The information was “going to be passed along to the detectives the next morning, but fortunately, we apprehended him before we could act on that,” Kenny continued.
Luigi Mangione Set To Be Arranged On State Murder Charges
Luigi Mangione is set to appear in court in New York on Monday for arraignment on state murder charges, per USA Today.
Authorities accused Mangione of shooting Brian Thompson earlier this month in an act that was targeted and premeditated.
He is being held at a detention center in Brooklyn.
The crime, “in its most basic terms, was a killing that was intended to evoke terror,” District Attorney Alvin Bragg said.
