The Chiefs won their first NFL title in Super Bowl IV, and it took 50 long years for the franchise to win another championship.
The arrival of coach Andy Reid to the team in 2013 was a watershed moment for a franchise that had not returned to the NFL’s biggest stage, despite having had great figures over the years such as Joe Montana, Marcus Allen and Derrick Thomas.
For the 2017 season, the Chiefs took Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the 10th overall pick, who had previously turned down an offer from MLB’s Detroit Tigers.
With Mahomes as the starting quarterback and Reid as his “tutor”, the franchise’s history took a 180-degree turn, and it is now one of the most powerful dynasties in NFL history.
The NFL’s new dynasty
With Kansas City’s return to the Super Bowl, they become the first team to play a third consecutive NFL championship game after winning the previous two.
Up to seven teams previously failed to achieve this feat after winning back-to-back NFL championships, and those teams are:
- Green Bay Packers (I and II)
- Miami Dolphins (VII and VIII)
- Pittsburgh Steelers (IX and X)
- Pittsburgh Steelers (XIII and XIV)
- San Francisco 49ers (XXIII and XXIV)
- Dallas Cowboys (XXVII and XXVIII)
- Denver Broncos (XXXII and XXXIII)
- New England Patriots (XXXVIII and XXXIX)
Now, Kansas City managed to reach its third Super Bowl in a row after winning the first two, but it is going for an unprecedented feat.
Has any team ever won three Super Bowls in a row?
The Chiefs are one win away from becoming the first team in the Super Bowl era, which began in the 1966 season, to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
In addition, few teams have reached three consecutive championship games.
The first was the Miami Dolphins, who after losing Super Bowl VI won the next two editions, while the Buffalo Bills have a record that looks almost impossible to match, reaching the Super Bowl four consecutive years, but unfortunately for them they lost all four games.
Now the Chiefs have the opportunity to do something bigger than anyone else in history, which would place them not only among the best, but possibly the strongest and most solid dynasty in NFL history.
