Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, tragically passed away at a resort in Costa Rica during a family vacation.
The Gardners announced Miller’s death on Sunday, saying he fell ill “along with several other family members” during the vacation.
“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.” Brett and his wife Jessica said in a statement.
Brett, who retired from the MLB team in 2021, and Jessica have been married since 2007. They share an eldest son, Hunter, in addition to Miller.
In the aftermath of the news, there was a shocking revelation that some people can be quite cruel online.
A bunch of social media trolls made the news of Brett Gardner’s son’s death even worse by issuing laughing reactions on a Facebook post.
The New York Yankees posted a statement on FaceBook that has garnered over 98,000 likes, 11,000 comments, and over 4,600 shares.
Among those likes were at least 45 people who decided to put a “Laughing” reaction to the news.

Brett and Jessica asked followers to “respect our wishes for privacy as we mourn and search for healing.”
Brett Gardner spent his entire 14-year career with the Yankees and last played in 2021.
He was part of the team when it won its last World Series in 2009, just a year after he made his MLB debut.
