The unarmed bystander who bravely tackled a gunman and likely saved many lives during Sunday’s mass shooting in Australia has been identified.
Bondi Beach, Sydney, was the scene of what authorities are calling a targeted antisemitic attack. At least 11 people are dead, while 29 have been hospitalized with injuries.
A pair of gunmen opened fire during the Jewish holiday celebration, one of whom was killed. The other is in critical condition, and police are investigating whether there was a third shooter.
Videos of an unarmed man taking one of the shooters down have gone viral on social media. The man, who has been identified as Ahmed al-Ahmed, was shown creeping alongside a car before tackling one of the assailants.
He managed to wrestle his gun from his hands, pointing it at him to subdue him, but not firing.

South Wales Premier Chris Minns hailed the bystander “a genuine hero,” per Reuters.

“He is a hero, 100%,” a relative told a local news station.
