Sierra Canyon High student ID’d as driver killed after Tesla tumbles down embankment in Malibu

MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) — The victim killed in a rollover crash in Malibu has been identified as a 16-year-old student who attended Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth.

The deadly crash happened just before 8 a.m. Wednesday on South Malibu Canyon and Potter roads, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office identified the victim as Hunter Langley.

He was driving a Tesla when the vehicle “made a sharp turning movement to the right and veered off the roadway,” the CHP said. The car went airborne and tumbled about 30 feet down the embankment.

Langley, the only person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sierra Canyon High School announced his death in a letter to families.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I share the tragic news that a student of our Upper Campus community died earlier this morning in a car accident,” Jim Skrumbis, the head of school, said in a statement. “My deepest sympathies are with the family as they navigate an unimaginable loss, and I know our entire community will join me in holding them in our thoughts and prayers. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not be sharing additional details.”

Sean Parrow, a fellow student at Sierra Canyon High School, described Langley’s death as “very devastating.”

“He was a great kid … I feel so sorry for his parents. Condolences to them, of course,” Parrow said in an interview with ABC7. “He was always the nicest person, he put a light to the room every time he walked in.”

Others who were passing by the campus were stunned to hear the tragic news.

“Personally I didn’t know the young man…it’s just heartbreaking to hear about the death of a young man taken way too early,” said a local resident out walking Thursday morning.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

All Wednesday evening athletic events were canceled on campus out of respect for Langley. The events included the boys basketball team’s scheduled game in the Mission League finals, which will not be replayed.

“Today and in the days ahead, our Wellness Director and Upper Campus Leadership will be available to support our Middle and Upper School students, with additional support provided as needed,” Skrumbis said. “Students are encouraged to seek out a trusted adult if they need space to talk, reflect, or simply be supported.”
