Travis Kelce’s romantic nod to Taylor Swift in Grotesquerie is confirmed by Ryan Murphy

Travis Kelce‘s acting debut in Ryan Murphy‘s new FX horror series, Grotesquerie, paid homage to his girlfriend, Taylor Swift.

Following weeks of speculation that the show’s third episode paid homage to the 34-year-old popstar’s 2017 hit track, Getaway Car, Murphy, 58, confirmed the popular Swiftie theory.

While referring to the scene that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 35, and Niecy Nash-Betts attempt to flee the hospital together in a dream-like sequence, the  prolific producer told THR that the pair’s ‘red getaway car’ is ‘a little Taylor Swift nod.’

As for whether Swift may make an appearance in season two of Grotesquerie or another one of Murphy’s projects, the Glee creator revealed he has ‘talked to Taylor’s people about various things through the years.’

‘I will say is that I think she’s great and if she ever has time to do it, I would do it in a heartbeat,’ he raved. ‘I think she’s one of the greats. I was so shy talking to Travis about her. But he’s very sweet about it and respectful.’

Murphy went on to say: ‘They are a pop-culture phenomenon. It’s a very interesting dynamic, the way they’ve captured the imagination of the world.’

Murphy also praised Kelce for his ability to ‘roll up his sleeves’ on and always coming prepared to set.

In Grotesquerie, Kelce plays Ed Lachlan, a recovering drug addict working as a nurse and is a potential love interest for Nash-Betts’ character, Detective Lois Tryon.

Ed first meets Lois at the hospital where her husband was in a coma. After finding her sitting on a bench and smoking a cigarette, Ed began sweet-talking the detective before she pulled out a flask and started drinking. He warned her not to get in her car but she proceeded to drive after drinking.

In the next scene, Lois crashes her car into a pole and wakes up in the hospital with Ed as her nurse. She convinces him to sneak out of the hospital against her doctor’s orders, and he obliges.

In a romantic and flirty sequence, Ed and Lois flee from the scene hand-in-hand before escaping in his red convertible.

The scene sparked a theory on social media that Lois and Ed’s getaway car was a subtle nod to one of Swift’s fan-favorite songs.

Replying to a clip of the scene posted to X, formerly known as social media, one fan wrote: ‘Omg it’s the getaway car!’

‘Lol. Taylor must be laughing now,’ another Swiftie added, referring to the pop icon’s love of Easter eggs, while another chimed in, posting, ‘Not the Taylor swift reference.’

Others reacted to the link by sharing famous lyrics from the song with one writing the opening line, ‘Nothing good starts in a getaway car,’ while another added a snippet of the bridge saying, ‘They were jet set, Bonnie and Clyde.’

Another fan shared TikTok to highlight the connection, writing over a clip from the episode, ‘Does this look familiar Swifties?!.’

‘This can’t be a coincidence!’ the fan wrote in the post’s caption.

Meanwhile, other eagle-eyed fans recognized that the car looked very similar to the convertible that Kelce and Swift drove away from Arrowhead in after she attended her first Chiefs game.

‘Oh my looks familiar except the passenger was a blonde with hands in the air lol,’ one social media user posted.

The couple have recently been seen out on a string of date nights in New York City after surviving their alleged breakup date from a leaked ‘contract’ several weeks ago.

The contract is widely believed to be fake, and Kelce’s camp were quick to call it ‘entirely false and fabricated,’ but it claimed the duo were set to announce their split on September 28.

Many fans took to social media to claim Kelce's scene was a nod to Swift's 2017 song

The breakup date stipulated in the alleged contract has now passed without any fanfare, and without any news about a split.

Since then, Swift had been spotted at some of Kelce’s games and proving that their romance is still going strong despite the split speculation.

Late September also marked a year since the pair confirmed and shared their highly publicized romance with the world when Swift attended one of his football games for the very first time on September 24, 2023.

In between Eras Tour concerts, she makes time to cheer on Kelce at his games. Vice versa, he does the same for her at her shows.

After the AFC title game last year, Swift went onto the field to congratulate the tight end with a kiss.

She was also spotted in attendance at the Super Bowl game earlier this year to cheer him on in between her Eras Tour concerts in Asia.
