Patrick, Brittany Mahomes want to bring WNBA team to Kansas City

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes are hoping to expand their sports ownership portfolio in a big way.

The ownership of the NWSL’s Kansas City Current — which includes Mahomes and his wife — met with the WNBA in the hopes of bringing an expansion team to the region, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

The Mahomes family also owns minority stakes in the Royals and the MLS franchise Sporting KC.

This past March, the Chiefs quarterback expressed his desire to get teammate Travis Kelce and his girlfriend, world-famous singer Taylor Swift, to attend a Current game.

“We might get her here at some point, she’s a busy woman and Travis Kelce is a busy guy,” Mahomes said.

“So, maybe during season or something like that we’ll get her out to a Kansas City Current game. She loves supporting Kansas City just like we do and I’m sure Brittany can nudge her and get her here pretty easily.”

Kelce ultimately made it to a game in August.

Mahomes purchased a minority stake in the Royals in 2020.

“I’m honored to become a part-owner of the Kansas City Royals,” Mahomes said in a statement after buying into the franchise.

The WNBA is in full-on expansion mode

“I love this city and the people of this great town. This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in this community, which is something I’m excited to do.”

The WNBA is in full-on expansion mode, with new teams slated to launch in the Bay Area under the Golden State Warriors ownership group and a Toronto franchise falling under the purview of the Raptors owners.
