Earlier in the night, Paul had taken over the ring with confidence, walking through the bout against a clearly slower and less aggressive Chávez. Despite fighting in front of a largely pro-Chávez crowd, Paul controlled the pace and walked away with scores of 99-91, 98-92, and 97-93 from the judges.

“All the boos are words, and actions speak louder than words, so y’all can shut the f— up!” he shouted during the post-fight interview. “I’m hip, I’m really hip, I just beat your boy’s a–, easy work.” He added, “Wait till I get going even more, motherf—ers.”

Chávez, speaking to the media later, admitted he hadn’t brought his best. “I thought I lost the first five rounds, so I tried to win the last rounds,” he said. “He’s strong, a good boxer for the first three, four rounds… but I don’t think he’s ready for the champions.”
