For the first time since Justin Jefferson got drafted by the Minnesota Vikings, there’s a quarterback battle happening in training camp.
That battle, of course, between veteran Sam Darnold and the Vikings No. 10 pick JJ McCarthy. With less than a month until the regular season, Jefferson might have revealed who he’d prefer to be the starter.
“They’re both different types of quarterbacks,” he said. “Sam is more of a vet quarterback, he likes to put touch on the ball here and there, he knows what speed he needs to throw the ball and how he needs to throw the ball. J.J.’s still young and just wants to rip it all the time. (He) has that strong arm and wants to get it there.”
I would like to see that clip

Based on that quote, it seems obvious that Jefferson would prefer to have Darnold start over McCarthy if the season started right now.
However, it wasn’t a complete knock on JJ, as Jefferson recognized that McCarthy has unique arm talent but might need more development time.
Also, it’s not as if Jefferson has the final say about who the starter is, but it’s hard to ignore the opinions of someone widely considered the best wide receiver in the league.
Justin Jefferson Looks For Fourth Pro Bowl Season Despite QB Controversy
Jefferson has already had a historic career, making three Pro Bowls, one All-Pro selection, and was the 2020 Rookie of the Year.
His 5,899 receiving yards and 30 touchdowns already put him on track to be remembered as one of the greatest receivers to ever play in the NFL.
However, it will now be tested whether he could do that without Kirk Cousins at the helm of the offense.
