High school football is supposed to be about pride, teamwork, and Friday nights. At Elk Grove High School near Sacramento, the focus has turned to a much more troubling issue. A disturbing locker-room hazing incident has rattled the program and forced school officials to act fast.
Sources told The Sacramento Bee that at least three varsity players targeted a freshman teammate. They reportedly pulled his pants down, mocked him with simulated sexual acts, and someone caught it all on a phone. The school suspended the players right before the home opener, keeping them off the field while the scene unfolded.
District spokesperson Lisa Levasseur said the students faced “appropriate disciplinary action” and confirmed that law enforcement is now involved. Principal Rudy Ortega also emailed parents on September 4, stressing that the incident “requires our collective attention and actions.”
High School Scrambles To Repair Damage

In her message, Ortega said the school will add more supervision in the locker room and review how its athletes conduct themselves. “It has come to our attention that a group of student-athletes have engaged in behaviors that do not align with the standards of conduct and character we uphold,” she wrote, according to The Bee.
Elk Grove’s quick move matters, since state athletic officials leave hazing discipline to individual schools. Unlike higher levels of the sport, there’s no outside body stepping in with penalties. That same week, another program at the college level dealt with its own controversy after one of its star players faced serious legal trouble, showing how discipline issues are emerging in high school football.
The scandal hurts even more because Elk Grove has long been known for producing top athletes. Names like MLB agent Scott Boras, NBA champion Bill Cartwright, and ex-Bears linebacker Lance Briggs all trace their roots back to this program. Now, the school is fighting to protect its image while ensuring accountability.
Fans have seen plenty of ugly scenes in football lately. Fans are getting restless and involving in chaotic fights with each other, which is ending in arrests. For Elk Grove, the culture inside its locker room has to change before the community can fully move on.
