Taylor Swift has faced criticism over a new lyric from her upcoming studio album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, which she recently previewed.
The singer announced her latest album while appearing on fiancé Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, which he co-hosts alongside his brother, Jason.
The album, which is scheduled to be released on 3 October, features the 35-year-old musician on the cover partially submerged in water while wearing a diamonté brassiere.
And since her announcement, Swifties have gone down the theory rabbit hole, with many taking it upon themselves to analyse the cover art and the ‘meaning’ behind the album’s name.
At a recent pop-up experience with Spotify in New York, Swift revealed some of the lyrics that will be featured on ‘The Life of a Showgirl’.
A video shared by Rolling Stone on Instagram showed a dressing room table, complete with photos of Swift on her Eras Tour. And written on the mirror in red lipstick were the lyrics: “Oftentimes it doesn’t feel so glamorous to be me.”
It wasn’t clear what song these lyrics were lifted from, however. But a few social media users aren’t too happy, with some branding it ‘tone deaf’.
Taking to Reddit, one person wrote: “Even if it turns out to be a great song, this is an awful lyric to lead with PRwise,” while another posted: “What an odd thing to say considering what most people are going through today.”
A third said: “Agreed, it’s tone deaf. There’s a lot of us that work jobs that feel like a prison for a hell of a lot less. If you hate it so much, step back. She could still have a successful career songwriting for other people.”
Meanwhile, others were more open in their criticism, with one mockingly writing: “Aww, poor baby. She can sulk and count her millions.”
Someone else highlighted her Eras Tour, saying: “Taylor Swift really cosplaying the struggle like her Eras Tour grossed less than $1k.”
However, one person acknowledged there may be something more going on in the lyrics.
They argued that Swift may be making a reference to the challenging side of being so famous, but they still acknowledged the overall problem, writing: “She’s calling out the dark side of fame, but critics will say it’s the same old victim card in a new costume.”
While a second said: “She’s extremely privileged, but she’s a person too.”
