A 20-year-old college basketball player, Andre Bell, is dead following a shooting incident in Nashville on Sunday.
Bell was critically injured in the shooting; he did not die immediately.
According to reports, the Fisk University sophomore was on his way back to campus at the time of the shooting. He succumbed to his injuries at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center the following day.
A Tennessee native, the 20-year-old was studying Business Administration at Fisk.
Nashville.gov notes that he was driving along the I-65 north highway with two friends after attending a gymnastics event at the fairgrounds on Sunday evening.
“The investigation to this point shows that Bell and two friends had been at a gymnastics event at the fairgrounds before getting onto the interstate in Bell’s white Nissan Sentra to return to campus,” the report reads.
Bell’s friends told police they noticed a dark sedan in the left lane next to them when they suddenly heard gunshots and realized Bell had been hit.
Andre Bell’s Coach Describes Him As A “Dominant Force”

As noted above, Andre Bell succumbed to his injuries on Monday. His death follows that of a rising football star killed in a car crash just a few weeks ago.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department is investigating Bell’s murder. However, a motive is unclear at this time.
Fisk basketball coach Jeremiah Crutcher said the program “lost a leader on and off the basketball court. Andre ‘Dre,’ a young, bright, and gentle young man, was unfairly snatched from this world.”
Crutcher described Andre Bell as a “dominant force” on the court. He reckons the player will be remembered for “his infectious smile, loving personality, and unique ability to always bring warmth to a room.”
The MNPD is urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
