Kaia Gerber re-creates mom Cindy Crawford’s 1993 Oscars look on the red carpet

Kaia Gerber’s latest statement dress reminds us how much she and mom Cindy Crawford are cut from the same cloth.

Gerber walked the red carpet at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival Sept. 12 for the world premiere of her new film, “Shell.” For the screening, the 23-year-old channeled her mother’s 1993 Oscars look by wearing a similar white bodycon dress designed by Hervé Léger.

In an interview with Vogue, Gerber’s stylist Molly Dickson explained the process that led up to the moment.

“Kaia had sent me a mood board for TIFF, and this was one of her references,” she said of the dress Crawford wore while attending the awards show with her then-husband Richard Gere. Crawford and Gere divorced in 1995, and she married Rande Gerber in 1998.

“I thought it would be amazing to pay tribute to Cindy’s iconic moment,” Dickson added.

Just like her mother did at the Oscars, Kaia Gerber rounded out the look with a pair of white pumps. According to Dickson, the model also dove into her mother’s personal jewelry collection to elevate her all-white look with vintage diamonds and a classic Omega watch.

Gerber currently stars in the Max Minghella-directed dark comedy horror alongside Elisabeth Moss and Kate Hudson.

The TIFF red carpet wasn’t the first time Gerber dug into her mother’s closet for inspiration.

In 2019, Gerber celebrated her 18th birthday dressed in a Versace black leather and gold buckle ensemble similar to the Versace look her mother wore to the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.

Crawford has spoken about lending more than just clothes to her daughter in the past. In a 2017 interview with The Cut, Crawford recalled giving her daughter advice about modeling.

“I just went with her on her first fashion season, and I think the only advice I gave her was that you can only sleep five or six hours one night or two nights in a row,” Crawford explained. “It’s cumulative — take the time to catch up on your sleep and have alone time.”

“I love this fashion world and all the experiences I’ve had as a model, but sometimes it’s just people touching you all day long,” Crawford added. “You need time when nobody is touching you. You need to take your makeup off, put sweatpants on, and step away from the fabulous world of fashion for a minute or two.”
