REPORT: Adam Schefter Reveals 3 Big-Name QBs The Miami Dolphins Could Target In Blockbuster Trade To Replace The Injured Tua Tagovailoa

The Miami Dolphins could eye three big-named quarterbacks with star signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa still sidelined, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Miami placed Tua Tagovailoa on the injured reserve after he suffered a concussion in the team’s Week 2 home loss to the Buffalo Bills. Tagovailoa has to miss at least three more games, meaning the earliest he could return from the IR is Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, Schefter suggested that the Dolphins place phone calls and see if they can trade for Denver Broncos backup Zach Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson or Cleveland Browns third-stringer Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

“In my mind, they have to be making calls….there are three quarterbacks in my mind that make sense. Now I’m not telling you that they have or will reach out to any of these quarterbacks (Z. Wilson, R. Wilson and Thompson-Robinson)…

They have to save their season here, and it doesn’t look like they can. Maybe Tyler Huntley can step in, in relief here, and stop the bleeding and get things back in order…but to me, they have to look for another quarterback…those would be the guys that I would be looking at if it were me.”

With Tua Tagovailoa out at least three more games, the Dolphins would be wise to add quarterback depth. Backups Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle don’t inspire confidence as capable short-term starters, though one could say the same about Zach Wilson following am miserable three-year stint with the New York Jets.

The Steelers named Russell Wilson their starting QB after the preseason, but he has yet to play this season because of a calf injury. The team is 3-0 with Justin Fields, so Wilson could be available via trade if Mike Tomlin decides to make the former the permanent starter.

There are calls for the Browns to bench Deshaun Watson in favor of Jameis Winston, so Thompson-Robinson could be available to Miami at the right price with no clear-cut path to starting in Cleveland.

Dolphins Must Add Depth Behind Tua Tagovailoa

The Dolphins have way too much young and veteran talent to punt on this season. An offensive-minded guru and head coach like Mike McDaniel can make it work with a competent backup QB, something Thompson and Boyle haven’t shown they can be.

With plenty of QBs around the league available via trade, Miami GM Chris Grier needs to act quickly and upgrade the depth behind Tagovailoa.
