The bad news continues for the San Francisco 49ers as star wide receiver Deebo Samuel is currently hospitalized with pneumonia and ‘fluid in his lungs,’ per team head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Samuel played through an illness on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch.
Now, his condition has worsened, as there is no timetable for his return, per Shanahan.
Samuel is half of one of the best wide-receiver tandems in the NFL alongside Brandon Aiyuk.
Now, San Francisco will be without both wide receivers, as Aiyuk tore his ACL on Sunday and will not return this season.
Samuel has spent his entire professional career with the 49ers after a stellar college run with South Carolina.
The 28-year-old has carved out a unique role in the NFL with his strong presence in both receiving and running the ball.
The 49ers entered the season as one of the NFC’s favorites to get back to the Super Bowl.
Seven weeks into the NFL season and several teams appear better positioned to make a playoff run than the defending NFC champions, who sit at 3-4.
The Packers, Lions, Vikings, and Commanders have all looked dominant this season in ways the 49ers have not.
San Francisco has another tough test coming up on Sunday night, facing an old rival in the Dallas Cowboys.
