LONDON — Little did Swifties know Taylor Swift was going to bring Florence Welch on stage for a surprise duet of “Florida!!!” at the final night of the European Eras Tour.
“You can beat the heat,” Swift sang as the lights turned green in Wembley Stadium following her performance of “So High School.”
“What?” fans questioned as she continued to sing, “if you beat the charges too.”
As the audience processed the added song, throngs of fans began to shriek. To add more gas to the fueled excitement, Florence Welch popped out of the stage to sing her part, verse two.
A deafening roar blew across the stadium as Swift and Welch danced around the diamond singing, “Florida!!!”
The center platform raised, propelling the two stars during the line, “So I did my best to lay to rest / All of the bodies that have ever been on my body.”A swampy green animation framed the “Tortured Poets” singers while the dancers posed like gnarled trees.
As the two singers made their way down the catwalk, the crowd shouted, “Florida!!! It’s one hell of a drug.” The green light-up wristbands glowed in the London night. The lights flashed to the five beats following the state’s name. No wonder a guard told fans in the VIP section Tuesday morning that rehearsals were going overnight into the early morning hours.
When the two finished Track 8 from “The Tortured Poets Department”, Welch took a bow and blew a kiss to Swift.
“Wembley stadium, make the most amount of noise possible for national treasure, the extraordinary Florence and the Machine,” Swift said.
The music started to “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me.” Swift and Welch held hands and skipped back to the diamond section of the catwalk. As Swift went into her next song, Welch disappeared underneath the stage.
“Florida!!!” has never been performed at the Eras Tour since the album was released in April.
