Sean Payton Facing Backlash Over Shot at Chiefs After Blowout Loss

Over the weekend the Denver Broncos stormed out of the gates with a long touchdown pass from rookie quarterback Bo Nix to rookie wide receiver Troy Franklin for a 7-0 lead over the Buffalo Bills.

That would be the last time the Broncos put points on the board, though, eventually losing the game 31-7. Following the loss, Denver packed its bags while Buffalo started preparation for a contest against the Baltimore Ravens.

Had the Broncos won the game, they would have traveled to Kansas City for a game against the Chiefs, whom they defeated 38-0 in the final week of the regular season to punch their ticket to the playoffs.

Patrick Mahomes and Sean Payton

While his team was eliminated from the playoffs and won’t have a chance to face off against the Chiefs, head coach Sean Payton still found a way to call out Patrick Mahomes and company.

“There’s a lot of confidence in this team if we could get past that game, the next game we felt real good about,” Payton said following the team’s loss.

His comments immediately caught the attention of those on social media.

“Beating those backups really went to his head,” one fan said.

“Ill tell you what, getting beat by 24 points and saying ‘Yea but we would have been the next guys’ is a new one,” added another.

“Sean Payton’s teams are apparently as good in hypothetical situations as SEC football,” joked another.

“Losing by 24 and then saying ‘we would’ve beat the 1 seed’ is crazy behavior lol,” offered another.

Kansas City took down Denver in their first meeting thanks to a blocked field goal before the Broncos blew out the Chiefs in the final week of the regular season – albeit with mostly backups on the field for Kansas City.
