The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to make NFL history following their 15-2 regular season. Having won back-to-back Super Bowls, the Chiefs are aiming to become the first team in league history to three-peat.
As a result … NFL fans and media alike have maybe grown a distaste for the Chiefs over their run of dominance that has featured them in four of the last five Super Bowls.
However, analyst Cris Collinsworth thinks there’s more to it than just plain success.
“Because they have converted into a defensive team. Not that they aren’t capable but when we’ve all like were overwhelmed watching the Kansas City Chiefs, it was because Tyreek Hill and Co., and they were taking the top off, and throwing bombs, it was just insane. They were scoring points all over the place and it’s really not what they are right now,”
Collinsworth said on an appearance on the “Dan Patrick Show”. “They are still fully capable of doing that but they got to 15-1 this year because of the way they played defense and honestly, it was the same thing last year.”
We’re not sure that’s the reason, however.
Some fans and media simply want shiny new presents under the tree. … and the Chiefs are not “new” in that regard.
There’s also an overkill factor not unlike the ones the Dallas Cowboys know well.
The Chiefs are on TV every week. They’re stars, with Netflix specials and Adam Sandler movie cameos. Taylor Swift hangs out over here. Caitlin Clark hangs out over there.
To a non-Chiefs fan? Yeah, being “America’s Team 2.0” can get tiresome.
But this much is true: Over the last two seasons in Hill’s absence, the Chiefs have made the shift to having a premiere defense in the NFL. Paired with Andy Reid’s offense, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has transformed the unit into one of the NFL’s most feared.
Spagnuolo’s proficiency with Kansas City’s defense had led to him getting interest from the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Jets’ head coaching vacancies.
