Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has expressed regret over his emotional outburst following the Chiefs’ 20-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills in December 2023, specifically his reaction towards Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen. The heated December contest came down to the final moments when the Chiefs seemed to have taken the lead, but a penalty on the Chiefs wiped out a touchdown and left the team unable to score again.
With the Chiefs trailing by three in the closing moments, Mahomes connected with tight end Travis Kelce, who was surrounded by three Bills defenders.
Kelce then tossed the ball to Kadarius Toney, who sprinted to the end zone, seemingly securing the Chiefs a victory. However, the play was nullified due to an offsides penalty on Toney, and the Chiefs could not recover, leading to a hard-fought loss.
After the game, Mahomes‘ frustration boiled over, and he directed his anger not just toward the referees but also towards Josh Allen. In a moment of heated emotion, Mahomes vented his frustrations both on the sideline and during the post-game exchange with Allen.
“That is terrible, man. We’re playing our f***ing asses off and just for you to f*** the call.” The star quarterback then continued his tirade, adding: “That’s the worst f***ing call I’ve ever seen. That’s the worst f***ing call ever man.”
Mahomes’ apology
In an interview following the outburst, Mahomes acknowledged that his emotions had gotten the best of him and expressed regret over how he treated Allen.
“Obviously, you don’t want to react that way; I mean, I care, man. I love it – I love this game, and I love my teammates,” Mahomes said on 610 Sports Radio. “I want to go out there and put everything on the line to win, but obviously you can’t do that, can’t be that way toward officials or really anybody in life.”
Mahomes admitted that he regretted how he handled the situation with Allen.
“More than anything, I regretted the way I acted toward Josh [Allen] after the game, because he had nothing to do with it. I was still hot and emotional, but you can’t do that. It’s not a great example for kids watching the game. I was more upset about that than me on the sidelines,” he added.
